The generic races are great for new players,

As a new player with an x-hundred page rulebook, seeing a couple of races laid out so you can see the sort of thing you're going to be playing with can be invaluable (even if you never used them),

Certainly I used them for the first couple of solitaire games I played - just to let me get to grips with the rules without introducing extra complexity,

Same here. It really helped me get a handle on the VBAM system and it was perfect for quick plug and play solitaire.
