Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)
How about, for the simple version, we use Command Cost. That bridges the gap between numbers and cost, and it'll be more along the lines of 'You detect five cruiser sized vessels... you have to deploy at least two cruisers and a destroyer to keep them off your back." It's also the kind of info ...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)
I suggested half the cost to prevent masses of specialized freighters, scouts and other utility craft from drawing off an equal value of combat vessels. There's no reason you need a 5 C$ warship to fend off a 5 C$ freighter. It also lets that rear-guard be sacrificial, which is kind of interesting t...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)
For contested movement, consider permitting the defender to attempt to block a fleet of any size. Should the attacker press on regardless, he must leave behind a covering force equal to or greater than 1/2 the construction cost of the blocking force. This allows small defending fleets to threaten la...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)
I had an idea for internal trading that sort of fits into this, and would work well with the facilities/economy system, and provide another shunt for dumping economic points. There are moral rolls every turn per system yes? Apply a penalty for the distance to the sector capital, say, -1 for every tw...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)
Interesting! Re: Colony Infrastructure Have you considered taking Intel and Tech and moving them into facilities and onto space stations in the new system, so by building specific units, focused bonuses could be accrued? Re: Diplomacy So you're thinking of moving more to a relationship based system,...

Oh, no, quite right. I was out to lunch. Carrier slots = to CR seems very reasonable.

Re: December 2011 Forum Playtest
I would probably peg it to 2x command rating even for starships, otherwise carriers get seriously nerfed. And while they could use some nerfing, not THAT much nerfing. Another option would be to increase Carrier cost to 1.5 mass points, which would make carriers filled with flights equipped with car...

Re: Edge Cases
One option would be to have Flight Cargo/Assault capacity be capped by Command Cost. Command cost is equivalent to physical size, yes? That way, as tech improves, the combat power of assault shuttles improves, but carrying capacity remains the same.

Re: 2E Ability Brainstorm: Marines, Assault, Atmospheric, ??
I guess I am just not seeing the void here. we have 'atmospheric' which means 'can operate in space and in ground combat' so, i guess i just don't see what is missing. i mean the term is backwards for ground units, but the effect is the same, yes? really, just use 'transitional' for any unit that c...

Re: 2E Ability Brainstorm: Marines, Assault, Atmospheric, ??
The easiest way to do the basic stuff is have: A) Flights can be ground based or space based. Transitional flights operate in both environments without penalty. B) Spaceships with Atmospheric can be built and repaired on planets, and can serve as Flights in ground engagements, halving all combat val...

Re: 2E Ability Brainstorm: Marines, Assault, Atmospheric, ??
Definitely. I mean, ground units actually have significant advantages when fighting spaceborn forces directly. Missile silos can be dug deep into the earth, there's lots of ground clutter, and the mother of all heat sinks. Conversely, space forces are nicely silhouetted against a dark background and...

Re: Edge Cases
No, I'm aware of all that. And I also understand that a frigate need not actually be more maneuverable than a dreadnought. But to get a 1 level increase in formation, a C$ 20, TL0 battleship needs to devote 7% of it's mass to stealth, whereas a C$3 frigate would need to devote 40% of its mass. This ...

Re: December 2011 Forum Playtest
... create a separate ability to encompass the benefits conferred to ground units. The ability would let ground units fight as flights in space combat, being based from Carrier or Assault. As for the name of the ability, we could be somewhat honest on what this represents and just call it Mecha, th...

Edge Cases
I've noticed a few edge cases in the ship design system that create illogical results that I thought I'd share: 1. Carriers make the best transports: there is no reason you can't put cargo slots on a flight. That makes sense... it allows you to make lighters and assault shuttles. But it also creates...

Re: December 2011 Forum Playtest
I think a jet fighter unit would just be considered Ground, not Atmospheric.
One question I've run into. Is flight basing determined by the flight's C$ or CC? I'm running into conflicting information.
