Interesting concept. I've thought about ways to model a sea-type setting in VBAM but never got anywhere (it might be because I tried to do a 'total-war' setting with fleets and armies).

That suggestion seems to allay my fears about the Galaxies combat system--as a definitely unashamed member of the Grand Fleet school, any optional rule that would either increase the CR or give a fleet a number of special missions equal to the flagship's CR would satisfy me.
I'd argue for a die roll. 1-3, Intel reduced to zero, 4-6, Intel reduced to 1 (maybe there were some very effective operators that managed to survive, or very deep sleeper cells?)

As for hex maps, the main problem is that I don't have any way to create hex maps (except for printing some hex graph paper out, which will cost me in both money and flexibility (if I want to start a new campaign, I'd have to go to the library to print it out), but I can do normal maps on squared p...
I don't have any specific details on hand because most (okay, all) of my campaigns were done on P+P, but one of my Grand Fleet campaigns (hmm, I like that) was the one I ran only two years ago, Once More Unto The Breach (http://forums.vbamgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1575). I must admit I'm almost ...
I think I should explain something--namely, my objection to the new combat rules. I've always been of what I've termed the Grand Fleet school--namely, a fleet that in Starmada would cost 10-20k points (!), and the 'new' rules with only one 'squadron' now makes it much more unlikely that I'll be able...
I'm kinda liking the Intel idea--make it dependent on distance so you can easily claim a system right next door, but it costs a lot to claim a system a long way away.
I'd go with that. System fighters can partake in Defensive scenarios without any penalty, or can take part in any other scenario in a similar vein to Carrier Strikes. Some of my reading material has given me an idea--namely, the Starfire book with the Thebans. There could also be a Carrier St...
I had voted for the middle option, but when writing my opinion I started to realise that it should be an either/or situation. Either the assault ships can only support an invasion or they can carry any sort of troops. My inclination is with the former (mainly to stave off the same issues as were fou...

I like the concept you outlined. It would give the NAW something to do, rather than sit around. Would it be similar to WAP, albeit simplified?
I was going to go for a 'only Strikefighters can perform Carrier Strikes', but that was a knee-jerk reaction from a big-guns fan. Having read through the rules, I can support it, and it would enable carriers to carry out long-range strikes. Heck, it might even give players the chance to engage in a ...
