I liked Kaplan's Hog Pilots, Blue Water Grunts: The American Military in the Air, at Sea, and on the Ground (author of the second article/link). I don't agree with all his reasoning but I respect him and his analysis. I've had a cousin in the Coast Guard stationed at Guam and a brother in the Air National Guard do overseas deployments there and Guam is indeed the logistical hub of PACOM.

The first article, by Patrick Henningsen, is indeed biased and his superficial comparisons of the US to Rome in his concluding paragraph really made me  Trying to say the entire NATO block is on a mission of new colonialism is just ridiculous. China is the neo-colonizer for the 21st century. The author doesn't mention that these Chinese projects in Africa are all Chinese affairs (laborer, management etc).

It's simply about oil and economic stability--they go hand-in-hand. Europe needs to import massive amounts of its oil so it has a vested interest to keep the black gold pumping.
