Unlukiest Mercenary squadron ever

Post by echoco »

Playing MAS today and it reminds me of my second MAS, on mission 2 of a random campaign.

I was playing around with special rule where there are 2 pilots in the F4 at the time

Can't rememebr the exact skills but they were along the line of
F-5 "Timer" Leader 0 init, 0 man, 0 AtA(H) -1 guns 4 AIM-9, ext fuel tnk
F-5 "Fireball" XO -1 init, 0 man, -1 AtA(H) -1 guns 4 AIM-9, ext fuel tnk
F-4 "Roadkill" F-4 specialise(F-4) 4 AIM-9, 3 AIM-7
"Missy" F-4 0 radar, +1 AtA(R)

Missy was Road Kill's RIO
Used every special rule in the book hahaha

Mission was moderate threat level shoot down some migs I think was 3 Mig21 but so far this MAS made it through hard times (lost 2 rookie pilots) and I was feeling crazy and needed money, them failing me never entered my mind.

started in band 2 moved through the bands and no contact, radar didn't detect anything come target area in addition to 3 Migs another 2 Mig21 popped out, initiative was something like

Mig21 #1
Timer
Mig21 #2
Mig21 #3
Mig21 #4
Fireball
Roadkill/Missy
Mig21 #5

game plan was for F4 to hang back and use up the Sparrows while the two more experienced pilots go in and get some, there's plenty of ammo.

Turn 1

Mig #1,2 & 5 went for Timer while #3 went for Roadkill/Missy and #4 and Fireball had a private fight

Timer fired a sidewinder and damaged a mig I think it was #1 or #2
#3 tried to kill Roadkill/Missy with a long range shot but missed. Roadkill/Missy fired back with a sparrow but missed

Fireball out maneuvered #4, got off a sidewinder then again during his activation.

Timer 3 aim-9
Fireball 2 aim-9
Roadkill/Missy 4 aim-9 2 aim-7

Turn 2

Timer got a shot off and damaged (-1) I think #1 while #2 came in and splashed him while he was celebrating :( he did parachuted

5-2 odd and I was wishing I had Roadkill and Missy in 2 separate planes.

Fireball was in a bind missed with another missile but managed to dodge a missile as well.

#3 tried to engage Roadkill/Missy but didn't manage and they got off a sidewinder but missed, they fired again at #4 and killed that one, first kill of the mission and the 2 pilots were paying off.

Fireball 1 aim-9
Roadkill/Missy 3 aim-9 1 aim-7

2-1 odds

Turn 3

#1 went after Fireball now and missed

#2 managed to catch up to Roadkill/Missy but the missile missed
#3 been after Roadkill/Missy all along and got a missile to connect and my 2 pilots in the Phantom came down on silk
Fireball went after #2 and missed with the last missile
#5 was easy and went after Fireball.

I wondered why I even gave him any missiles

Turn 4

Fireball got jumped by #1 but pulled up and got a gun kill, ok lucky shot he wasted 4 missiles I still didn't like him very much
#2 came in a wide circle and put tracers all over his F-5 but only managed to do -1 damage
#3 did some weird maneuver and came out staring at Fireball's canons and got blasted away, ok so 2 in a roll lucky.
He put himself behind a mig but the mig pulled a gun on him but he managed to dodge it.
#5 came up but Fireball did that thing in Top Gun and got a gun kill again
3/3 kills I really wondered why I didn't give him a gun pod

too good to be true from 5-3 to 5-2 to 4-2 and now 1-1

Turn 5 do or die now, neither plane have any missiles left and Fireball only has 2 ammo left and fuel was low

#2 attacked but Fireball managed to get a shot out first, and he missed, I knew it was too good to be true.

Fireball turned around and attacked again but the mig had the upper hand and went guns on him and missed

Turn 6
and Fireball was running on fumes with 1 shot left and 50/50 chance I thought of running but greed made me go ahead

#2 pulled up on Fireball and he counter maneuvered and shot the last mig down.

Managed to return to base with an F-5 after all
Timer never got back to base and that was a big hit, Roadkill and Missy would be back after 1 mission so for the next mission it was just Fireball who was the new leader and made ace, put experience into AtA(H) I think he was good enough with guns.

Never used 2 pilots on any two seater again.

As it happened there wasn't enough money for a new plane, just enough to repair the F-5, activation and 2 missiles, guess who died on the next mission?

Ouch! Tough break for that MAS. I always tell myself I should leave a money reserve, and keep to some easy campaigns until I build up, but it never does seem to work out like that for them one way or another. At least you got that last bit of cannon fire to bring down the last enemy. I suppose Roadkill and Missy will have to go look for work in another MAS now.

Yep I leave some money normally but that mission I went all in with the missiles and bought an F-5 for Fireball, I figured I'll have missiles left over enough for the next mission, I think most of the money went into paying the wages.

Roadkill and Missy were hired for another MAS that one isn't looking very good either, me and my abysmal bid roll.

The mission was the longest dogfight I've ever played, by the time Roadkill/Missy went down I figured there's nothing left to loose, never imagined an F-5 in 4-1 fight with no missiles would win, yeah I'm bragging

Brag away! That's part of the fun for this game. Nice write-up by the way.
