Rise of the Kingdom
A solo VBAM:SX Exploration Campaign
THis is a campaign diary that follows the United Star Kingdom, a human power that formed after hyperspace got shattered a few hundred years ago. At that time, the United Earth Alliance had developed sectors to make bureaucracy easier, and the United Star Kingdom was called the British sector before the Fall. Now, after hyperspace is starting to heal, the United Star Kingdom is making its way back into the universe.

United Star Kingdom Units

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

All USK units are designed with a macro level of 0 in each category. Ground units also have a macro level of 0.

SHIPS
Nelson-class SD

Cost: 26, Maintenance: 4/1, DV: 26, AS: 25, AF: 21, CR: 20, CC: 6, Notes: Assault, Gunship. Bombardment Points: 16
The Nelson is squadron leader of the offensive battle squadrons. Only four exist, and all of them are in the offensive fleets of the HMSN.
Ganymede-class BC

Cost: 16, Maintenance: 3/2, DV: 15, AS: 15, AF: 9, CR: 12, CC: 4. Bombardment Points: 8
The Ganymede is the primary heavy brawler of the fleet. Capable of putting up a serious fight against any ship her size or larger, the Ganymede is meant for two missions--that of ship killer and of orbital bombardment in support of ground units
Callisto-class ECA

Cost: 17, Maintenance: 3/1, DV: 15, AS: 13, AF: 6, CR: 12, CC: 4, Notes: Scout (2), Ballistic. Bombardment Points: 6
The Callisto is the flagship of the offensive fleets. Sitting behind the front line it can aid the HMSN units either strategically or tactically, and moreover has a respectable battery of long-range missiles to support the battleline
Tharsis-class CV

Cost: 12, Maintenance: 3/1, DV: 12, AS: 8, AF: 4, CR: 9, CC: 4, Basing: 12 (standard), Notes: Carrier, Ballistic. Bombardment Points: 4
The Tharsis escorts the Callisto into battle, a pair supporting each Callisto both with missile batteries and the twelve flights of Lancaster bombers it employs. Unfortunately, it is extremely maintenance-intensive.
Phobos-class CVL

Cost: 6, Maintenance: 2/4, DV: 5, AS: 5, AF: 1, CR: 5, CC: 2, Basing: 6 (standard), Notes: Carrier. Bombardment Points: 2
The Phobos is the light carrier employed in the frontline battle squadrons as a way to employ the Spitfire superiority fighter. Plans had been in place to place Lancasters on-board, but the Admiralty vetoed the idea, instead relying upon the Tharsis as the bomber-carrier.
Deimos-class EX

Cost: 7, Maintenance: 2/2, DV: 6, AS: 0, AF: 3, CR: 5, CC: 2, Notes: Explorer (2), Direct Assault (2). Bombardment Points: 1
The Deimos is meant for one mission only--exploration. Its only weapons are a decent set of interceptors and the ten marine squads it uses to pose a threat to light enemy forces. However, the Admiralty have placed a great reliance upon the Miranda as the primary offensive arm of the Explorer Corps
Miranda-class DD

Cost: 6, Maintenance: 2/4, DV: 5, AS: 8, AF: 4, CR: 5, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship. Bombardment Points: 5
If the Nelson and Ganymede are the pride of the HMSN, the Miranda is the workhorse--thirty-two Mirandas are in service, primarily as defence forces, trade escort or supporting either the heavy battlewagons in battle or the Deimos' in first-contact.
Gibralter-class Base

Cost: 38, Maintenance: 6/1, DV: 39, AS: 32, AF: 38, Basing: 12 (standard), Notes: Scout (1), Jammer (1), Carrier
There is only one Gibralter in service, and that is over New London. It is not expected to fight off invaders by itself, but to serve as a lynchpin for the HMSN if required.

GROUND UNITS

Lancers: Cost: 4, Maintenance: 2/1, A: 4, D: 4, DFac: d3, ATR: 4, Marines
Armoured Division: Cost: 3, Maintenance: 2/2, A: 4, D: 4, DFac: d3, ATR: 4
Militia: Cost: 1, Maintenance: 1/4, A: 2, D: 2, DFac: d2, ATR: 2, Peacekeepers

FIGHTERS

Spitfire: Class: MF, Cost: 1/2, Maintenance: 1/12, DV: 2, AS: 1, AF: 2
Lancaster: Class: MF, Cost: 1/2, Maintenance: 1/12, DV: 2, AS: 2, AF: 1

Dear god that is a huge ship! How are you going to handle damage for that monster. I hope with the opinion rules. Shame to have it crippled by 1 pt of DV damage! :)

Republic of Neue Berlin

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

Apart from a -1 in ground forces and engines, all other Macro techs are at 0

SHIPS
Bismarck-class CA

Cost: 13, Maintenance: 2/2, DV: 12, AS: 11, AF: 5, CR: 9, CC: 4. Bombardment Points: 5
The Bismarck is the heavy brawler of the fleet, and is well-appreciated. Two divisions of her class are in service, one as the primary fleet unit in Neue Potsdam and one in the main fleet at Neue Berlin
Grosser Kurfurst-class ECV

Cost: 12, Maintenance: 4/1, DV: 12, AS: 6, AF: 2, CR: 9, CC: 4, Basing: 12 (standard), Notes: Scout (2), Ballistic, Carrier. Bombardment Points: 3
The Grosser Kurfurst is the flagship of the navy, and the only ship of her class. She is stationed at Neue Berlin
Emdem-class frigate

Cost: 5, Maintenance: 1/3, DV: 3, AS: 6, AF: 2, CR: 4, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship, Atmospheric. Bombardment Points: 4
The Emdem is the light unit, flanking the Bismarcks with speed and agility. Two divisions of her class are in service, split into three two-ship squadrons, two in Neue Berlin and one as the escort to the trade fleet

GROUND UNITS

Republican Defenders: Cost: 3, Maintenance: 2/2, A: 4, D: 4, DFac: d3, ATR: 4

FIGHTERS

Vektor (need a more appropriate name than this)
Class: MF, Cost: 1/2, Maintenance: 1/12, DV: 2, AS: 1, AF: 2

Grand Hegemony of the Elmuntai

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

Apart from a ground forces level of -1, all other Macro levels are at 0

SHIPS
GerTam-class BCV

Cost: 15, Maintenance: 5/2, DV: 13, AS: 14, AF: 8, CR: 12, CC: 4, Basing: 6 (heavy), Notes: Gunship, Carrier. BP: 8
The GerTam is the newest unit in the Hegemony fleet, combining the roles of the LirTam/SorTam and the SorLim'Ak into a capable package. Before the GerTam was introduced, fighters were the strike weapon, whittling down an enemy until the carriers, with their heavy weapons, could get into range, and the escorts were the only real chance of defeating the bombers. But with an integrated Guardian AFML system, the GerTam is very successful. Lamentably, only one division are in service.
GerLim-class ECA

Cost: 18, Maintenance: 3/1, DV: 15, AS: 12, AF: 6, CR: 12, CC: 4, Notes: Scout (2), Ballistic, Assault. BP: 6
The GerLim is the sole ship of her class, and the flagship of the Hegemony navy. Also, she is the ship most likely to carry the Hegemony Council when they travel to their only colony.
LirTam-class BCV

Cost: 10, Maintenance: 2/2, DV: 8, AS: 10, AF: 1, CR: 8, CC: 3, Basing: 3 (heavy), Notes: Carrier, Gunship. BP: 5
The LirTam was the heaviest vessel constructed purely for a combat role before the GerTam. With fighters and a heavy anti-ship armament the LirTam is very effective at AS duties. However, its lack of any real anti-fighter weapons make it a target for enemy bombers and a vessel in need of an escort
LirLim'Scu-class CM

Cost: 9, Maintenance: 2/2, DV: 8, AS: 0, AF: 4, CR: 8, CC: 3, Basing: 6 (heavy), Notes: Carrier, Assault. BP: 1
The LirLim'Scu is designed primarily to land troops onto a planet. As a combat craft it is poor, only having Guardian AFML systems for anti-fighter work. However, as a carrier it is excellent. Only one division is in service, as the flag squadron of the X'Tav'Ras fleet
LirLim'Vel-class EX

Cost: 7, Maintenance: 4/2, DV: 8, AS: 0, AF: 4, CR: 8, CC: 3, Basing: 6 (heavy), Notes: Explorer (2), Carrier. BP: 1
The LirLim'Vel is based on the LirLim'Scu, but where the LirLim'Scu is meant for assault capabilities, the LirLim'Vel is meant for exploration. Unfortunately the wide arcs on the LirLim'Scu had to be narrowed on this vessel to make room for the delicate long-range sensors and science labs for which the ship needs to complete its duties.
SorTam-class BCV

Cost: 7, Maintenance: 2/4, DV: 5, AS: 7, AF: 1, CR: 5, CC: 2, Basing: 3 (heavy), Notes: Carrier, Gunship, Non-Jump Capable. BP: 4
The SorTam is the light battlecarrier of the fleet. Around the size of a destroyer, the SorTam is a very dangerous craft, unfortunately just as much for its crew as the enemy.
SorLim'Uk-class DDG

Cost: 6, Maintenance: 2/3, DV: 5, AS: 8, AF: 4, CR: 5, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship, Ballistic. BP: 5
The SorLim'Uk, when compared to her direct-fire cousin the SorTam, looks quite impressive. However, as she carries no fighters like the GerLim she is not valued very much, and has low crew morale
SorLim'Al-class DDE

Cost: 7, Maintenance: 2/4, DV: 5, AS: 0, AF: 8, CR: 5, CC: 2, Basing: 3 (heavy), Notes: Gunship, Carrier. BP: 4
The SorLim'Ak was, for a while, the only effective anti-fighter unit found in the Hegemony Navy, and some still argue that its Guardian AFML system is superior in arc to the GerTam. While only one division of these ships has been constructed, each one is the supporter to a pair of either LirTam or SorTam battlecarriers, giving much-needed anti-fighter protection to a squadron

FIGHTERS

Tom'Ak-class assault bomber: Class: SHF, Cost: 1/1, Maintenance: 1/12, DV: 2, AS: 3, AF: 1

The Tom'Ak is the only fighter in the Hegemony Navy, and maybe now you can see why the Hegemony love their fighters. A total of 72 flights of these fighters exist

GROUND UNITS

Lancer Division: Cost: 4, Maintenance: 2/1, A: 4, D: 4, DFac: d2, ATR: 4, Marines
Rifles Division: Cost: 1, Maintenance: 1/3, A: 2, D: 2, DFac: d2, ATR: 2

The Campaign so far

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

With a starting level of INT-2, the USK had five colonies. With my embarassing high rolls, the USK has a wartime economy worth 200 EP, so 100 EP at peacetime levels, and 15 EP from trade. Unfortunately, my over-zealous buying spree means I've got a maintenance budget of 106...

The first turn brought exploration success, both EX fleets discovering new systems. The fleet at New Bristol discovered Neue Berlin and, although the RNB had some unfortunate luck when generating their AIX stats, they have such a high relationship that war seems unlikely. I decided to see whether the RNB had achieved INT status yet (all splinter colonies roll as normal on the NPE table to see what level they are) and they had. I then gave a 25% chance for the RNB to have been to another system, and they rolled 14%, and thus I gave them Neue Potsdam. In total, the RNB has a peacetime income of 14 (Neue Berlin=8, Neue Potsdam=6), a trade income of 2 and maintenance of 13

The fleet from New Luton discovers a normal system with two jump lanes

In 2250.02, the fleet from New Luton encountered the Grand Hegemony of the Elmuntai, an INT-1 power. Relations are reasonable, but the high AG rating means that the hostilities check is only -16, and a sufficiently bad roll or rolls on the relationship could mean a massive fleet attacking New Luton via X'Tav'Ras. The Admiralty feels confident of their capability to deal with the Elmuntai should the need arise, but would rather get their first contact record off to a positive start. The GHE has a peacetime economy of 38, trade of 6 and a maintenance of 38 (they might have some powerful ships but they cost an arm and a leg to maintain)

In the next two turns nothing notable has occured

(Start of regular reports now)

Good lord! That thing is as big as my United Earth Alliance and Salik Empire combined! All in an INT-2 power... I bet you felt almost giddy rolling that up.

Keep the posts coming! I've been reading them with great interest.

Yes, I had a fun time spending all of those credits. Along with two extra shipyards (which I then converted into a shipyard-2 as its a house rule), I bought one Gibralter with 12 Spitfires, 2 Callistos, 5 Tharsis with 60 Lancasters, 8 Phobos with 48 Spitfires, 4 Nelsons, 8 Ganymedes, 6 Deimos and 32 Mirandas. Needless to say I'm going to try to keep those ships for the time being. Three Lancers, 10 Armoured Divisions and 12 Militia units were also purchased to give adequate ground unit defence. One Lancer was placed on New London, Birmingham and Edinburgh. 2 Armoured Divisions have been placed at each colony, while 4 Militias were placed at New London and each colony got two Militias of their own.

The GHE got an extra shipyard which I decided to join with the existing one (at the moment the GHE seems to be heading towards a changeover towards the GerTam in favour of the LirTam, simply because it seems that a pair of GerTams is cheaper to construct and maintain than two pairs of LirTams and the almost mandatory SorLim'Ak escort. In terms of combat units the GHE got 2 LirLim'Vels, 2 LirLim'Scus, 4 LirTams, 4 SorTams, 4 SorLim'Aks, 2 GerTams (all with attendent fighter complements), 3 SorLim'Uks and a sole GerLim. I splashed out on 3 Lancers and 6 Rifles, two thirds going onto Elmuntai and the rest on X'Tav'Ras.

The RNB got one Grosser Kurfurst with 12 Vektors (I really need a good German name for this, because I think Vektor actually is a Russian word...?), 4 Bismarcks and 6 Emdems. 4 Republican Guards were also purchased, two at both colony. They're in reserve, simply to save 2EP a turn.

Ikhanx Clans

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

Apart from a ground forces Macro level of -1, all other Macro levels are at 0

SHIPS
Ikhanx Thalar-class EBC

Cost: 18, Maintenance: 3/1, DV: 15, AS: 12, AF: 5, CR: 12, CC: 4, Notes: Scout (2), Assault, Ballistic. BP: 6
The Ikhanx Thalar is classed as a 'warlord cruiser' by the Ikhanx.
Ikhanx Vhalor-class BC

Cost: 16, Maintenance: 3/2, DV: 15, AS: 15, AF: 9, CR: 12, CC: 4. BP: 8
The Ikhanx Vhalor is a recent development, capable of leading individual squadrons and providing a heavy punch
Ikhanx-class CA

Cost: 12, Maintenance: 3/2, DV: 11, AS: 12, AF: 6, CR: 9, CC: 4, Notes: Gunship. BP: 7
The Ikhanx was and, for quite a few years yet, will be the primary heavy ship of the Clan fleet.
Ikhinz-class CV

Cost: 12, Maintenance: 3/1, DV: 11, AS: 9, AF: 3, CR: 9, CC: 4, Basing: 12 (standard), Notes: Carrier. BP: 4
The Ikhinz is the only carrier in the fleet, designed to support the battleline with both a respectable set of weapons and twelve flights of Xolof bombers
Lekhanz-class EX

Cost: 7, Maintenance: 3/2, DV: 7, AS: 6, AF: 3, CR: 7, CC: 3, Notes: Explorer (2), Ballistic. BP: 3
The Lekhanz is designed to lead exploration efforts, and has a reasonable battery of missiles to enable them to lead moderate-sized fleets. One idea being discussed is a light battle scout, replacing some of the LRS with a EWS suite, giving the Lekhinz (the proposed name) a Scout (1), Jammer (1) level and enabling small fleets to be formed. However, the Ikhanx are not yet convinced by the idea...
Pholok-class FF

Cost: 5, Maintenance: 1/3, DV: 4, AS: 6, AF: 0, CR: 4, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship, Atmospheric, Non-Jump Capable. BP: 3
The Pholok is the light anti-ship unit of the fleet. Its well defended and packs a decent punch which is one of the reasons why it has not been usurped by the Mekhinq-class patrol boat
Philuk-class FFE

Cost: 4, Maintenance: 1/3, DV: 4, AS: 0, AF: 3, CR: 4, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship, Atmospheric. BP: 2
The Philuk is the leader of Pholok squadrons, providing anti-fighter defence while the Pholoks pummel the enemy
Pholok-Arkr-class FFG

Cost: 5, Maintenance: 2/4, DV: 4, AS: 5, AF: 0, CR: 4, CC: 2, Notes: Gunship, Ballistic, Atmospheric, Non-Jump Capable. BP: 3
The Pholok-Arkr supports the Ikhanx Thalar in launching massive missile salvoes at the enemy
Mekhinq-class PB

Cost: 2, Maintenance: 1/6, DV: 1, AS: 4, AF: 1, CR: 2, CC: 1, Notes: Gunship, Atmospheric, Non-Jump Capable. BP: 3
The Mekhinq is used primarily as the support for explorer squadrons and the trade escort. Some have called for the introduction of Mekhinq squadrons to the battle fleets but critics argue that a design four times weaker than the Pholok would be an unnecessary waste of Ikhanx lives.
Mekhinq-Arkr-class missile boat

Cost: 2, Maintenance: 1/4, DV: 1, AS: 3, AF: 0, CR: 2, CC: 1, Notes: Gunship, Ballistic, Atmospheric, Non-Jump Capable. BP: 2
The Mekhinq-Arkr is an attempt to increase further the amount of damage a flag squadron can do. Some argue that it is one leap too far, but the same proponents of the Mekhinq support this vessel.

FIGHTERS

Xolof: Class: MF, Cost: 1/2, Maintenance: 1/12, DV: 2, AS: 2, AF: 1

GROUND UNITS

Clan Assault Division: Cost: 4, Maintenance: 2/1, A: 4, D: 3, DFac: d3, ATR: 4. Marines
Clan Defence Division: Cost: 3, Maintenance: 2/2, A: 3, D: 4, DFac: d3, ATR: 4
