The Lambda Variant

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

Note about campaign name:

I've run out of suitably epic-sounding names, so I used a phrase that appeared in Space: 1999, I believe. The only episode I remember vaguely...

After this campaign I'll probably start using comedians names. So, expect campaign "O'Briain" soon...:)

Anyway, back to the campaign.

Starting Conditions

One INT-1 power--the United Star Kingdom. Starting off with a TDP of 104 (wartime), a trade income of 10 and maintenance of 59 (full maintenance is actually 63 but some vessels have been placed in reserve)

The USK has activated a small splinter colony by the name of the Republic of New Guyana. This splinter has a TDP of 1, and a maintenance of 1 (three flights of heavy fighters).

Relations between the two are extremely good, and are in a Partnership.

3000.01

The USK exploration fleet explores a new system, a minor colony with a total RAW of 6 (5 for the actual system, 1 for the dense asteroid field). Not only that, but there are extensive ancient ruins and an automated factory in the system. This system is given priority of colonisation.

The RNG formally petitions for membership of the USK, which is accepted.

3000.02

The former RNG votes to move wholesale to the new system. Despite a few dissenting voices, the RNG wants to leave the resource-poor system and move to a system that promises a very lucrative future.

3000.03-06

During this time period, the colony of New Exeter is founded. The two census living on New Guyana as well as the sole census on-board the colony fleet live in the system and there is full employment. System defences are taken over in 3000.04 by the trade escort of three Temeraires.

3000.05

The exploration fleet is allowed to continue exploring after finishing its stint as defence for New Exeter. The fleet discovers another system, an outpost. More impressive, however, is the huge raider cache on one of the very small planets in the system. 43 EP makes its way into the USK treasury.

3000.06

The exploration fleet returns to New Exeter.

3000.07

The exploration fleet activates the Free Stellar Bailiwick. This power is fairly large, comprising of two large splinters. The two powers are very friendly.

3000.08

The exploration fleet returns to New Exeter.

3000.09

The fleet strikes lucky again, this time discovering a colony-equivalent system. It is mineral rich (6) and will be colonised as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the USK and FSB sign a NAP and PT.

3000.10

The USK increases productivity at New London to 8.

The system of New Exeter finally constructs its own Temeraire frigates to enable the trade escort to return to its duties.

The USK and FSB both propose an MDT which is duly signed.

Home Fleet activates the last units in the reserve. All of the USK's formations are now on active duty.

3000.11

The exploration fleet discovers a new system. It is quite interesting and has been given a beta-level for purposes of colonising.

3000.11 continued

The USK orders TF 3.4 back onto trade escort duty.

3000.12

The USK activates an IND-3 NPE, the Free State of Horakh. They are extremely close to becoming an INT-1 power (247/250) but are quite a bit lower on the technology tree. Both sides establish pretty good relations.

The FSB offers the USK an alliance, which is accepted.

End of year 3000

New Avalon, New London and the FSH homeworld, Horakh-Kel, experience population growth.

The Moral at New Avalon and Horakh-Kel increases to its new maximum level (+2 in annual morale shift for both systems)

Civilian miners discover a massive new mineral source in New Solent. Despite earlier estimates, new seams increases the RAW of New Solent to 3 from 1.

The civilian miners in New Guernsey also discover new mineral sources, increasing the total RAW of the system to 8 from 6 (4 from planet-based sources and two from the twin dense asteroid fields).

Just as the exploration fleet announces their discovery of the FSH, however, hyperspace portals are detected in the system they'd left earlier. A new interstellar power, the Nadusian Democratic Republic, discovers the new system. Relations with the USK are cool, but not overly hostile.

3001.01

The FSH finally researches the technology of hyperspace engines and plans are drawn up to refit the exploration command with hyperdrives.

The NDR exploration fleet returns back to their homeworld, and the USK fleet returns to the contact system.

The FSB experiences a critical relationship shift with the USK and offers a Partnership. This is then followed up by a formal request for unification, which is granted. The FSB is now a member of the USK.

3001.02

The USK starts the process of scrapping the FSB units and constructs Temeraire frigates for system defence. All of the FSB units were weaker in terms of defence, anti-ship and anti-fighter capabilities.

The FSH refits its exploration units with hyperdrives. However, no plans are made as of yet to refit the rest of the fleet.

3001.03

The USK completes the scrapping of the FSB units.

The USK activates another IND-3 power, the Holmantin Republic. This power is slightly behind on hyperdrive research (220/250) but with their economy in the black, they should reach INT-1 level in around nine months. Both sides establish fairly good relations.

The USK and FSH sign a NAP and PT with each other.

The FSH discovers a new system. Its fairly attractive, but no plans are made to colonise yet.

3001.04

In diplomatic news, the FSH and the USK met today to sign a mutual defence treaty. The USK and the HR also met to sign a NAP and peace treaty.

The NDR make their first exploration success since they arrived in the system unofficially known as Hub. Unfortunately its only an outpost system and not very mineral-rich.

A raider attack on New Avalon occured this month as six Alpha fighters (total cost: 1EP) tried to engage the trade fleets' escorts. They were destroyed without any damage to the fleet.

3001.05

The USK discover a new system. This system is a colony world but has a RAW of 10! The USK, wanting a second system to colonise, is extremely happy, especially as it has no external jump routes so it should be a safe system.

In diplomatic news, the HR and USK meet once again, this time to sign a mutual defence treaty.

3001.06

The FSH explore a new system. It has a very good RAW, but it isn't the largest of systems. Nevertheless, the FSH plans to colonise this system as soon as possible.

The USK constructs a QE colony fleet and a transport fleet in New Avalon. The plan is to colonise the systems simultaneously, New Guernsey forming the hub of the colonisation effort for New Portsmouth (the system discovered in 3000.09) and New Albion, the recently discovered system, will be colonised by census from New Avalon and New London.

The USK and FSH sign an alliance with each other.

3001.07-10

This is the time period over which New Portsmouth and New Albion were colonised and beefed up to act as supply points.

3001.07

The construction of six Temeraire frigates is authorised, three at Guernsey and three at London. These will form the defence squadrons.

The USK, exploring a jump route from New London, ends up in New Solent.

The NDR discovers a new system. This is a much better system than the one they explored previously, and is targeted for colonisation.

3001.08

The new Temeraires form TF 3.8 (New Portsmouth defence) and 3.9 (New Albion defence)

3001.09

No exploration successes this turn.

The FSH, in a remarkable move, ask for a Partnership. The USK is slightly worried at where these events may lead, but the offer is accepted.

The USK offers the HR an alliance, which is accepted.

3001.10

The USK discovers another system. It isn't very mineral-rich, but is marked for colonisation "at a later date"

The FSH activates an IND-3 NPE, the Degral Pact. However, both sides are hostile on contact and the FSH exploration squadron is destroyed.

It appears that the Degral Pact and FSH are of the same species but, prior to the hyperspace collapse, both sides and a third side, the Gironi Alliance, fought a three-sided conflict.

(CM Notes: I fudged these results a bit. Although they're the same species, I decided not to give them the +10 to the relationship they would normally have. This put them into hostilities and the FSH squadron was destroyed)

3001.11

The USK, FSH, HR and DP gear up for conflict. The USK makes good use of this and commissions the new fleet units that the Admiralty wishes to have. The FSH and DP both activate their reserve units, and the HR and DP both research hyperdrives. The FSH, noticing that none of their fleet units had hyperdrives, hurriedly refit ten of their fifteen hyper-capable units with hyperdrives.

The FSH and DP both succeed in declaring war.

The NDR activates a pair of INT-1 powers, the Avtarian Imperium and the MonDakrin Federation. The Avtarians are the contact power, and the NDR and AI almost come to blows (both have a positive hostilities check). It appears that the AI and MDF are also at war with each other.

(will finish write-up tomorrow)
