The Stars, Rent Asunder

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

Solo player, multiple starting power exploration campaign with VBAM:SX

(phew)

The Stars, Rent Asunder is a campaign involving multiple starting powers who have not yet met at the start, although they did know each other. All three are human powers. I did fudge the system generation rolls a bit to get an equal start for each power, but apart from that, nothing else.

The background behind this is a standard Hyperspace Collapse scenario. These three powers have just got back on their feet and are trying to see who else survived.

The three powers are:

Central European Pact: Primarily colonists from Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary and other central European countries (but no further east than the Ukraine or Belarus, and no further south than Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia)

Pan-American Alliance: Primarily North American colonists, mainly American and Canadians, but Mexicans and countries north of the Panama Canal also have colonists.

United Star Kingdom: Any power in the Commonwealth, either former or current (so this also includes Canadians, as well as Australians, New Zealanders, Indians et al.)

Each power has one homeworld and a major colony. The total domestic product at wartime is 102EP. The PAA and USK has a trade of 10, the CEP of 9 as quite a large portion of the population of the CEP at its conception were romantics and liked the idea of an Aristocratic model of government, while the USK and PAA went with the Meritocracy model)

Start of Campaign:

3000.01

The CEP and USK find each other, both exploration fleets jumping into the other power's minor outpost system. The CEP is pretty happy to find that other humans survived, and the USK is very happy as well, though not to the extent the CEP were (starting relationships: CEP-USK: 101, USK-CEP: 88)

3000.02

The PAA makes an exploration find, linking to the system that the USK had previously explored. However, the CEP is very cool towards the PAA. Debates rage in the government halls of Neue Europa (the CEP's homeworld) about the danger of two powers now one jump away from the homeworld and is settled by the CEP ordering the PAA fleet out of the system. When the PAA hesitates, the CEP declares hostilities. Relations also drop slightly towards the USK (only by 1) while the USK's relation goes up by one

3000.03

Turn still being generated

The PAA and CEP, now at hostilities, order the reserve into active service. The CEP has four Bismarck-class DNs activated and taking their role as squadron flagship of four squadrons, while the PAA activates their two Enterprise-class SCVs, both carrying 24 Burke-class heavy assault bombers. Both fleets are now at full strength.

(CM Notes: For the PAA, there are two fighter classes. The Hellcat which is like the CEP Viktor and the USK Typhoon, a heavy assault fighter, and the Burke. I don't know very many American bomber or fighter names, so I chose the one fighter I know of to be the standard fighter-bomber and the Arleigh Burke, a destroyer, to be the bomber name. If anyone can supply me with a good-sounding bomber name then I'll use that.

Also, one thing is, the CEP is slightly outnumbered at the moment, so I'm calling in the Exploration corps, which has a very nice force of five squadrons. The CEP explorer, the Orzel-class (taken from a Polish vessel which was built prior to the USSR collapsing) has the Command ability and Ballistic weapons, which made her an ideal flagship for a small fleet, and the CEP are rushing those ships to the First Fleet so that they can outnumber the PAA by a significant margin. But they don't know about the Burke bomber, and they don't know that the PAA will have 72 of those fighter flights (48 on the Enterprise, 24 on the two Essex) as well as several Hellcats (on the Texas assault cruiser and Langley escort carrier. Its going to be a ferocious encounter)

Hmm...

I didn't know that those were some of the names of bombers. Oh well.

I like Dauntless. Sounds a good name for a bomber.

3000.03 continued

The USK achieve their second exploration success and discover a new power, a splinter colony going by the name of the New Wessex Alliance, primarily of colonists from the south west of England and Wales. Their ship names are derived from geological eras of Earth. (Siluria, Ordovicia, Devonia). Both sides are relatively friendly towards each other.

The CEP and the USK sign a NAP.

3000.04

The two sides meet in the system of Contact (where the PAA and CEP met each other). The PAA has a Normal readiness modifier, while the CEP had a Superb readiness modifier.

The battle was won pretty much in the first turn, and it was a mistake by the PAA. Instead of concentrating their fighter superiority onto a couple of squadrons, they split their forces to try and cripple as many fighters as possible and four strike arms, attacking the squadrons consisting of one Bismarck, one Tegetthoff and two Badens, were simply wiped out before they got a chance to attack.

The battle lasted three turns, during which the PAA lost all of their forces in exchange for two Orzels, three Custozas and twelve Viktors (three destroyed in fighting, nine scrapped due to inadequate basing). A Habsburg, the three Kaszubs and three of the nine Emdems were also crippled, mostly by ship-board firepower.

The PAA discovers the USK. Both sides are pretty friendly towards each other.

3000.05

(still generating turn)

The CEP sends its crippled units back to Neue Europa for repairs and decides to move the rest of the fleet, with four pristine battle squadrons, to New Mexico, the system from where the PAA exploration fleet left.

The PAA frantically constructs a single Enterprise, two Yucatans, eight Albertas and the fighters for a last stand at New America, but it looks bleak.

The USK signs a NAP with the PAA.

3000.05 continued

The USK offers the New Wessex Alliance a NAP which the NWA accepts (automatically). The USK is offered a PT by the CEP and PAA and accepts both.

The CEP rolls a natural '100' for its relationship with the PAA, and offers a return to Normal Relations. As the PAA had offered an armistice, the two sides returned to normal relations and a return to the state of affairs ante-bellum.

The USK explores the system of Khorn-Tik'a, the homeworld of the Khorn-Tik Empire, an IND-3 power. Both sides declare hostilities, and the USK fleet manages to jump out just in time.

3000.06

The CEP moves its home fleet back to Neue Europa, and de-activates it's Bismarcks. The CEP constructs new units to replace those lost in the only battle of the American-European War.

The PAA New Mexico fleet returns back to base after leaving hastily when the CEP fleet jumped into NM last month.

The USK activates its Ark Royal-class carriers in preparation for the invasion of KTE space. The KTE simply pours funds into research, trying to get to INT-1 and then strike at the USK. Both sides attempt a DoW, but the USK fails while the KTE succeeds.

The PAA offers the CEP a NAP, which is accepted. This, with the negative hostilities check for the CEP, means peace might have broken out.

The PAA activates another NPE, the Neonian Republic, an IND-3 power. Both sides get along well and normal relations are established.

3000.07

The CEP re-creates the Exploration Corps and moves it to Neue Bavaria.

The USK 1st moves into Khorn-Tik'a to engage the KTE fleet.

The USK had a superior AS value and the advantage of surprise. The fleet jumped in on top of the KTE fleet and destroyed one of the two Felozhraq scouts, half of the KTE battlecruisers, two of the three light cruiser divisions and three of the light escorts in return for only crippling damage to a Hesphaestus.

The USK had kept their fighters in AF defence around the fleet squadrons and the attack by the heavy shadow bombers of the KTE stretched the defences to the limit. However, what the KTE bombers had in terms of durability they lacked in numbers, and only four of the twenty four squadrons made their attack, which only causes superficial damage to the already crippled Hesphaestus.

The second round of fighting saw the USK fighter corps take the offensive, all 84 squadrons targetting the lone Felozhraq. Withering USK AS fire destroyed the rest of the KTE fleet, and the USK flag squadron dispatched the four remaining KTE bombers easily.

Two Typhoon squadrons were lost but the rest easily had enough firepower to overwhelm the last KTE warship, securing the system with an almost pristine fleet.

The KTE had continued its tech investment, but without a fleet of any sort the news that the hyperdrive prototype was 80% complete did little to cheer the Emperor.

The USK explored a new system from New Edinburgh.

3000.07 continued

The CEP rolls a natural 50 on its relationship towards the USK, and the second roll to determine what way the decision will go is towards a closer relationship with the USK. The PAA roll a natural 100 on its relationship towards the USK. Both sides offer the USK a MDT and the USK, being on very good terms with both sides, accepts. Of course, now it gets interesting because, if the CEP and PAA has a massive FUBAR and end up at war again, the USK is going to have to decide which side to back.

3000.08

The USK sends its crippled Hesphaestus back to New London for repairs, and replenishes its lost Typhoons. The USK orders its two Royal Marines onto the transport fleet for invading Khorn-Tik'a, and the rest of the fleet is ordered to lay down an anti-troop bombardment to remove the five KTE divisions, two marines and three guards divisions. The weight of the bombardment wipes out the five divisions pretty easily.

The KTE requests an armistice, which the USK rejects (close decision, though)

No power made a successful exploration this turn.

3000.09

The USK sends its marines in after they arrive at Khorn-Tik'a. Unfortunately, only one division is able to assault, due to the second Hesphaestus still making its way to the front, but the lone Royal Marines division still makes easy work of dispatching the militia unit raised.

The KTE makes a second armistice attempt, but this is rejected again. Little matter, because the KTE, with all space and ground units destroyed, the USK makes its own terms. The KTE is subsumed into the USK.

The USK explores a new jump route and finds the Confederation of Brazil, a splinter colony with two systems. It must be something about the Ex.Com commander, as the CB and USK declares hostilities and the four Rio de Janeiro medium cruisers engages the two Beagle exploration cruisers. However, despite their declaration of hostilities, the CB is in a disastrous readiness state, and the USK are in a superb readiness state. After the quick action, two Rio de Janeiros are destroyed with no damage to the Beagles.

3000.10

The USK enters into a period of naval and army expansion as the defences of the USK undergo a change. The standard three Tribal destroyers are replaced by a pair of Tribals and three Flower frigates, and six new Royal Army divisions are raised, five on Khorn-Tik'a and one at New London.

The USK offers both the CEP and PAA an alliance. The CEP refuses, but only just, while the PAA accepts.

The CB sends its Nova Manaus defence squadron, a lone Rio, to Nova Brasilia.

The Neonian Republic offers the PAA an NAP, which the PAA accepts.

3000.11

The USK accepts the armistice offered to them by the CB. As a result, the CB becomes a protectorate of the USK. As part of the armistice, Nova Manaus will be abandoned, the productivity liquidated and the colonists moved back to Nova Brasilia. While some argue this is a violation of the colonist's rights, a large section is happy to live back in Nova Brasilia compared to Nova Manaus, which was very poor. The USK will also reduce the number of patrol units it will have to use in defence of the former CB.

The PAA, now with enough resources, orders several ships from the docks. Two Texas, two Essex and four Langleys as well as their fighter complement are constructed at the New America shipyards.

Technology investments are made by the CEP, the USK and the NR, who invests enough to make their prototype hyperdrive work. The NR will, as soon as possible, refit all capable units with hyperdrives.

The CEP activates an INT-1 power, the Kryptonian Royal Kingdom. Comprising three systems, the two powers are pretty friendly, but not the best of friends.

3000.12

The USK puts into motion its operation to ease defence spending and increase income by moving the two census of Nova Manaus to Nova Brasilia. The USK also scraps the three Rios that remain, and liquidate the productivity emplaced at Manaus. The USK also invests slightly more into their tech research.

The PAA also invests in tech research, ensuring that they would have a reasonable chance of making their tech roll.

The PAA activates another NPE, this time an INT-1 power known as the Falgnooran Concordat. Despite their having three systems, the FC has a smaller economy than the PAA. After exchanging greetings, the PAA leaves the system. At the end of their supply line, and the contact system being empty other than a claims satellite, there isn't much else to do.

The USK activates an IND-3 NPE, the Harloc-Kian Imperium. The HKI are not pleased to see aliens in their system, but fall short of actually firing shots.

The KRK exploration corps discovered Nova Brasilia, and entered into Normal Relations with the USK

End of Year

Population growths occur in New London, Neue Europa, New America, Neoni Soh, Kryptonar and Harloc-Kia. All other systems fail their census checks.

Raiders attacked the FC system of Alkrozer. Two strike carriers with six bombers faced two Khuraszaks and twelve Olzakh heavy assault extended operation fighters. The raiders were crushed.

Harloc-Kia and New London reported new finds of valuable metals, the New London find pushing up the available RAW by 33%

Due to several unfortunate incidents, the CEP is now regarded by raiders as an easy target. Raider rolls will be at a 30% increase for raider attacks to happen.

All powers save the FC and HKI succeeded in their tech rolls.

No new NPE was activated.

3001.01

The KRK explore a new system from Absilver, their major colony.

The USK disembarks the census from Nova Manaus, and increases productivity at Nova Brasilia.

The KRK offers the CEP a NAP, which the CEP accepts.

The HKI succeeds in their hostilities roll, and attempts a DoH on the USK, which succeeds. The HKI announces their declaration to the newly installed USK ambassador.

The HKI achieves INT-1 status.

3001.02

The NWA offers the USK a PT, which the USK accepts

The PAA, aware of the fact that the USK is becoming a superpower, offers the USK a partnership. The USK accepts the offer.

The USK dispatches their fleet to Harloc-Kia.

The HKI activates all units of their fleet, and maintenance shoots up to 42EP.

The USK finds another route into Neue Bavaria.

Please keep us posted. It sounds to me like the USK is going to have a rough couple of years ahead. How are their ship designs holding up?

Okay, but I'm designing some refits. They're all slightly improved designs, but so far the Nelson DN, Ark Royal CV and Hesphaestus BC refits will cost 2 EP. Did an Inflexible CA refit and cost 3EP to refit and only a marginal improvement in defence, however.

3001.02

The Battle of Harloc-Kia is a short and bloody affair. The USK timed their jump to perfection and caught out the HKI. Only three flights of Typhoons were lost in the battle.

(CM Notes: I'm thinking of assigning an elite officer to command the USK fleet. Every single battle they've been in has been a pretty one-sided affair, and mainly because of a Superb readiness modifier)

3001.03

The USK receives an armistice offer from the HKI, and accepts. As with the CB, the HKI is given protectorate status in the USK.

(CM Notes: I am seriously thinking, as well as the elite officer, to give the USK a Xenophobic-like trait. While I'm not using any ME rules apart from government types, the USK has encountered three alien powers, and two have declared war on them. The third is more friendly, but if I were the USK head of state I'd consider giving the Exploration Corps more ships and organise it along the CEP model--a small, capable fleet capable of dealing with, or at least severely damaging, any hostile power's fleets)

(current, turn still being generated)

(CM Notes: Due to my not actually having my notes with me, I may make a change or two to the diary, as the FC activated a splinter colony but I don't know which turn it was)

3001.03

The FC activates a splinter colony, the Korazer Freehold. The two powers are pretty friendly towards each other, and both enter Normal Relations.

The PAA explores a jump lane from the original outpost system it explored. The system is a reasonable candidate for future expansion.

The KRK explores a jump lane and discovers a colony system.

3001.04

No exploration attempts succeed this turn.

A raft of new treaties are signed, two of the most notable are the USK offer of an Alliance towards the CEP which succeeded this time, and the Unification of the PAA and USK. The PAA rolled for a treaty offer, and Unification was possible both ways. (PAA-USK and USK-PAA). As a check, I rolled acceptance for both and both passed.

The new power will be known as the Democratic Star Union (DSU). I was planning on naming it either the United Star Empire or trying to name it after one of the continental shields that forms either North America or the microcontinent of Avalonia, but decided to go with a name that would be acceptable to both sides.

(CM Notes: This was, I have to say, a bit of a surprise. I wasn't expecting unification to occur until 3002 or later, if at all. However, it benefits both sides of the new DSU, as well as making them into a true superpower--how does 187EP a turn from system sources and 37EP a turn from trade sound? As it is, I may try and introduce one or two INT-2/3 powers soon to curb the DSU, or else let it run. For once, there isn't a possibility of a war or hostilities breaking out. Massive change from the normal state of affairs so far)

The DSU looks like a juggernaut and it does not seem to have that many systems. But it includes several absorbed polities too, correct?

This should be interesting to watch.

I was wondering that myself, and most importantly, how they are going to be handled.
