Welcome to the Earth-Colonial Union!

Post by murtalianconfederacy »

New solo exploration campaign, based around the main group of humanity formed after a short and abortive multi-sided war in which several sides fled. The main powers that survived were the Earth Alliance, the Mercury-Martian Coalition, the Outer System Confederacy and the Jovian Union.

Quick run-down of the turns so far. At the start of the campaign, the sole jump route from Sol has been explored and the system, Wolf, colonised. Wolf has five jump lanes

2500.01

Exploration success. The two Triton-class strike carriers and three Vesta frigates discover the Ross Alliance, a very large splinter colony (how large? Two large splinter and one small splinter colonies with a RAW of 6!) The two roll unmodified 100s.

2500.02

The diplomatic corps have a field day. A total of four treaties up to Alliance level are signed, thanks to two 100 rolls on the NPE chart (the ECU is being run as a NPE) and both rolling their treaty offering chance and acceptance of each others treaties.

The way I view it is that the Ross Alliance need someone to help them (they had no jump routes out of the system) and the Earth-Colonial Union needed the RA's surplus census and a large colony to support them. Both sides get something out of the deal, and the fact that both sides were on the same side, roughly, during the war is not a bad thing either.

2500.03

Low treaty offering rolls and high relationship ends the Ross Alliance as a sovereign nation--the Ross Alliance joins the Earth-Colonial Union. In the unification talks, the Ross Alliance is regarded as a founder member of the Union, which means that Ross Alliance President Luiz Quieroz is installed as the fifth permanent member of the Union Council.

2500.04-2500.07

Exploration and colonisation of two new systems, Lalande and Proxima, occurs. The discovery of a couple of pirate caches at the two systems enables a quick productivity increase to occur. The last turn ends in the discovery of the Benelux Alliance, a large splinter colony linking off from Lalande. The BA is pretty happy with being discovered, but there seems no chance of a happy union with the ECU. For their part, the ECU doesn't mind. The BA only earns 4 EP a year and that would be almost negated by the defences stationed over Benelux as a priority, and the BA's force of two Maastrichts and two De Ruyters is not too much of a threat.

2500.08

The lone Exploration fleet returns back to Wolf, as the particular arm of space has been explored to the capability of the fleet until either or both Lalande and Proxima are capable of being valid supply points.

2500.09

The ECU discovers the first alien species, a IND-3 species known as the Pyurvian Imperium. Relationships are downright hostile, and only the inability of the Pyurvians to react to the declaration of hostilities and the long range ensures that neither side fires a shot in the disastrous first contact.

2500.10

The ECU mobilises its major fleet assets for an attack on Pyurvi Impera, the homeworld of the Imperium. The entire original ECU fleet is bolstered by the addition of the two RA heavy fleet squadrons. The ECU fleet jumps into the region of Pyurvi Impera and, through intelligent foreplanning and more than a little luck, they jumped straight on top of the Imperial Fleet at rest.

The battle that followed was the most astounding success in recent history. Without losing a single unit, the ECU fleet annihilated the Imperial fleet.

It was discovered that the Imperial Fleet at that precise moment happened to be in the middle of the "Imperial Recognition Awards" where the Emperor rewarded his subjects who had served him the most. As the awards were mandatory for all Pyurvians to watch unless in extreme circumstances, by the time the fleet mobilised to battle readiness they were destroyed. If the fleet was not in such a disastrous readiness state, the battle would have been much more even, but the ECU still had a 50% firepower advantage.

2500.11

The Imperium offers an unconditional surrender to the Union, and the Union accepts. There is no more that can be done with the navy, except for attempting an invasion. The Imperium is subsumed into the Union and will enter a period of transition towards full integration into the ECU.

2500.12

The excess income from the conflict and the Imperium's extra income allows the ECU to provide standard mobile defences for every single new world that joined the Union. Also, massive funds were allocated to the R+D departments, most notably the companies focussed on engine and weapon refinement and miniaturising techniques.

End of year 2500

Only two systems experienced a census increase--Sol and Ross.

The Random Event modifier occurred to the ECU who rolled for an increase in RAW by 2(!). A roll generated that Sol was to get the increase, which bumped up the RAW to 8.

The ECU also got lucky on the technological fronts. The rolls for Weaponry and engine research were 2's, while the equipment roll was a 5. The ECU succeeded in all three macro advances.

Finally, on the 31st December 2500, an exploration group from the Omazan Free Republic jumped into the system of Wolf.

2501.01

Plans to refit and expand the current fleet are put in motion, and the easy job of refitting and expanding the fleet of Vesta frigates and Tegetthoff heavy frigates (RA manufacture) was completed.

The diplomatic corps of both Sol and Omazra were busy, with a non-aggression and peace treaty signed.

In exploration news, the ECU has decided to pull back from exploration from a bit. The ECU has expanded to three times its original size and 260% its economic size. Plans for now revolve around refitting the fleet, improving Lalande and Proxima, then taking a new look at the exploration programme.

The Omazan Free Republic takes over the role, however, and the OFR activate their first splinter colony in the form of the Elaqran Free Union. Both sides are fairly amicable, but no treaties or indications that treaties might be offered are there.

2501.02-03

Nothing much to report, but the OFR did activate an IND-2 NPE in 2501.03, the Berian Federation. Both sides are cautious at first, but establish normal relations. The ECU moves new colonists to Lalande and Proxima

2501.04

The OFR discovers an NPE, but it isnt a discovery they wished to have made. The Lhoqran Imperial Coalition is an Omazan power that left the Omazra system when they lost the last battle of the war to the OFR. But now the LIC are back...and they want a rematch.

The loss of one of the two OFR exploration fleets is damaging, if hardly surprising. The two Imazler frigates were faced by two Airhekhan I-class light fortress ships which are the same size as the largest OFR combat vessel, the Vhatahv II.

2501.05-06

Apart from the OFR-LIC war, nothing much happens. In 2501.06, the two sides meet, and the LIC comes out victorious between Omazri (the outpost of the OFR) and Lhoqran-B, with the loss of only four Cekran heavy fighters. The OFR, it seems, is out of the campaign...

2501.07

The Earth-Colonial Union refits the rest of its fleet. With five shipyards in orbit of the homeworlds, and forty-seven non-atmospheric hulls to complete, it was tight but the new ECU fleet came out of drydock without the shuffling that would have had to have taken place without those shipyards.

The OFR places down 6 Vhatahv IIs, 6 Omazlors and two Omazlir hulls along with ordering sixty Vhinov light bombers. Its all the strength they can muster, and predictions are its not going to be enough. The OFR prepares to surrender...

Then a single jump point opens, and a LIC diplomatic courier emerges. The diplomat on board has been ordered to Omazri to offer cessation to the hostilities, and a anti-war movement similar to the one in Lhoqran-A and -B gains momentum.

At the Treaty of Omazri, the LIC and OFR returns to a state of normal relations. No reparations will be made by either side.

(CM Note: two '100' rolls for both relationships were made, and I decided to resolve the armistice offering as a treaty. Luckily, the +20 to the LIC's relationship pushes the hostilities check into negatives as well (if only a -1% chance of hostilities) so it looks like the OFR is safe for now)

The OFR exploration corps discovered another jump lane into Wolf, this time from the system that the OFR discovered the Berian Federation from

(CM Note: from an ECU PoV I'm happy that I placed orbital defences over Wolf to begin with. Its rapidly becoming the hub of the campaign)

2501.08

The LIC sends its heavy units back to reserve. Apart from this movement, nothing else happens, apart from the LIC exploration corps discovering the same system that the OFR exploration corps left the month before. I'm just hoping that neither side allows the hawks back into power, or else we'll have another war on our hands

2501.09

The ECU accepts two treaty offers this turn--one from the OFR of a MDT, the second from the Benelux Alliance of Partnership. And thats not the only treaties signed this month. The OFR also offered the EFU and LIC a Non-Aggression Pact, both accepted, and was itself offered a Peace Treaty by the EFU.

2501.10

The ECU improves the Productivity ratings of Lalande and Proxima to 3. Both are now valid supply points and also net the ECU an additional 6 EP (5 from production, 1 from trade).

The LIC have themselves activated two new powers. One, the system they explored, is the Unaka-Maisharin United Kingdom, and the other is the Thiloh Autocracy. Both are at war, and both are larger than the LIC (economically speaking)

(End of campaign at present--activating the UMUK and TA has taken a while longer than I'd hoped, but its just the relationship rolls for the UMUK and LIC to sort out. I hope they both are nice to each other, as the UMUK have better tech levels, a larger economy and some pretty impressive capital ships)

2501.11

The ECU constructs six Beagle-class exploration cruisers. Based on the Achilles hull, they are pretty potent cruisers. The ECU decides to split them into two three-ship squadrons. Both are located at Pyurvi Impera, the only system yet to have any of its jump lanes explored.

The UMUK and TA duel it out in three battles:

Battle of Unaka-Maishar/U'Gr'Hiy

The two fleets set off towards the other's system. Alert Unaka-Maisharin electronic officers spot the Thiloh fleet around half-way between the two systems, but the Thiloh fleet is in the worst position imaginable. The UMUK fleet carves up the entire Thiloh fleet for the loss of two Yeltav fighters.

Battle of Thiloh

The UMUK exploration corps finds its way into the Thiloh home system. Because of the lack of any outward jump lanes and the supposed safety of the U'Gr'Hiy system, there is only a basic defence squadron in the system. The TA fleet has the better AS value but the UMUK fleet, with its lucky rolls and scout functions, whittles down the Thiloh defence force with only slight damage to the paintwork

Battle of U'Gr'Hiy

After the battle between the two systems, the entire UMUK fleet sweeps towards U'Gr'Hiy, where facing them is another defence squadron. The battle that follows is little more than a clear-up job, the Yeltavs wiping out the ten Lhohs ultralight fighters while the fleet carves up the four hulls.

The Thiloh Autocracy now has only two hulls in space--the exploration corps that survived U'Gr'Hiy by luckily finding Lhoqran-B.

In exploration news, the OFR discovered the ECU system of Lalande. The OFR exploration corps has good and bad luck. Good: they keep exploring unexplored jump lanes. Bad: they seem to run into the ECU or the LIC every single time.

2501.12 (present, still not fully generated the turn yet)

The Thiloh Autocracy surrenders to the UMUK. With hostiles in both systems and only two combat-capable hulls, the TA offers unconditional surrender. The UMUK's largest combat hull, the Unaka-Rex superdreadnought, has two mass drivers each and there are four of them, so if the TA did not surrender they would have been used against U'Gr'Hiy.

The chatter from the LIC and OFR regarding this development has reached the ECU, and the Union Council is concerned. With the absorption of the TA into the UMUK, the Unaka-Maisharin now rivals the ECU in size of economy, and the surplus of credits will enable them to build even more ships--including the deadly Unaka-Rex. It may be that the ECU and UMUK might descend into war when they meet, and from an ECU point of view it might be advisable. Why? Well, if they strike first they may be able to knock out the UMUK fleet before it gets to jump into any of the ECUs systems. There is no chance of that happening at the moment (they would have to travel three jumps from U'Gr'Hiy to get to Wolf) but both side's system numbers are very close together, and it is likely that one or both sides find the other and initiate formal contact.

Of course, it is also possible that the two sides will meet and find each other to be the life and soul of the party. Heck, maybe the UMUK were fighting a war against the Thiloh because the Thiloh were mass-murdering, kitten-stamping, panda-bear-kicking little aliens who deserved to get conquered. Who knows? All I do know is, its starting to heat up...

2501.12 continued

The UMUK fleet moves to Thiloh as orders were issued prior to the surrender of the TA.

The ECU explorer squadrons both make successful rolls. One generates a new splinter colony, the Belt Alliance from the system of Haven. The relationship rolls are good, and no hostilities check is made.

The second finds the system of U'Gr'Hiy, the system which the UMUK fleet just left, and the first encounter between the explorers and the Unaka-Maisharin communications satellite, rigged up to allow easy communication between the fleet and Unaka-Maishar, is bad. Both sides roll a low relationship roll, and both 'succeed' on their hostilities checks. As there were no units in the system, the ECU squadron simply jumped back to Pyurvi Impera.

End of 2501.

Several systems made a successful census check this turn. Three ECU worlds (Sol, Wolf and Ross), Omazra, Lhoqran-A, Beri-Ka, Unaka-Maishar and Haven all make successful rolls.

Omazan mining companies explore a lucrative set of asteroids located on the outskirts of the Omazra system. Excited analysts expect a 33% increase in output from Omazra, dramatically improving the economy from a slow growth to a fast growth system.

The defences at Sol were amazed and more than a little amused when three Delta-class flights attack. The fact that the defence squadron contains one Tegetthoff and four Vesta frigates seems to have escaped the 1EP band of raiders

(to be fair, I didn't even generate the encounter, but anything more than a multiplier of 1 for the squadrons AF rating of 11 would have meant every single fighter would be destroyed, and an AS rating of 3 for the fighters would have maybe scratched the paintwork)

The Berian Federation is visited by a large, advanced ship full of a faction called the Adjudicators. They apparently decided that the Berians were at a point where it could be determined whether they would be a force for good or evil, and the Adjudicators judged that they should be aided in their struggle to join the interstellar community.

(rolled a 100 on the random events and decided to make a quick list for special events. Rolled for Adjudicators. They could have either left the Berians alone, aided them by jumping them up a level to INT-1 and/or given them a Productivity boost, or decided to destroy them. The Berians got incredibly lucky, rolling for both an increase to INT-1 and a Prod. boost of (1d6=3))

The Belt Alliance is also visited, this time by the Explorers. Despite being a closed system, the Explorers provided them with concrete information about a jump route to a new system

(same as the Berians, but they got Explorers, which is more useful for them. Before, they would have been either a new addition to the ECU or a power that, with its minimal economy, would just be a semi-active power. Now with the new system, a colony fleet, two surplus census and a pirate cache, the Belt Alliance might just be able to forge their own path)

2502.01

The two behemoths clashed between Pyurvi Impera and U'Gr'Hiy as the two fleets travel through hyperspace. The ECU fleet, comprising a total of thirty-one hulls, including eight Heracles-Beta battlecruisers and eight Hermes-Beta light battlecarriers, has a total AS of 418, while the UMUK fleet only has an AS value of 218. The ECU fleet was the first to spot the UMUK and had ample time to plan their attack, and although the UMUK spotted the ECU fleet on approach it was with little time to get to battle stations. Every single UMUK vessel was destroyed in the first salvo, and 28 Yeltavs were destroyed in dogfights around the first and second squadrons. The twenty Yeltavs left made a suicidal run for the flag squadron, hoping to at least take down one vessel, but the massed AF factor of every single warship destroyed the last UMUK offensive unit.

The LIC suffered a political disaster with the UMUK and declared hostilities.

In other diplomatic news, the OFR signed an alliance with the ECU, and signed a peace treaty with the LIC, while the UMUK and ECU both declared a state of war against the other.

2502.02

The ECU fleet completes its journey to U'Gr'Hiy and summarily annihilates the defence fleet that just arrives from Thiloh.

The LIC fleet moves into Shlorath and engages the defence fleet there. The LIC fleet is victorious, with more than a little luck.

After this, the UMUK request an armistice from the ECU. Seeing as the LIC engaged the UMUK as well, the Treaty of U'Gr'Hiy is signed. Shlorath becomes part of the LIC, Thiloh becomes a OFR protectorate and Unaka-Maishar and U'Gr'Hiy becomes nominal ECU provinces, but U'Gr'Hiy is declared free space for the OFR to travel between Thiloh and their core territories.

2502.03

The ECU constructs three new defence squadrons but, as there is only two new systems being added to the ECU, one is going to be left as a second Sol defence fleet

The OFR and LIC also start construction of their new defence squadrons for the new territories. The OFR also invests heavily in technology research, hoping to try and catch up with the ECU. The LIC instead focuses on starting to improve their infrastructure, and plan to colonise a new system two jumps from Lhoqran-B. A minor colony with a RAW of 6, Lhoqran-C is also a closed system.

The Berian Federation finally gets the resources to refit their archaic defence systems and construct a shipyard. The Berian Federation, with their INT-1 status, are now trying to garner enough resources to construct an exploration corps and then try to discover new systems for the Federation.

The Benelux Alliance rolls a 100 for its relationship to the ECU and requests membership of the Union. Despite it being a pretty small colony, the ECU accepts and creates a semi-permanent seat on the Council, which the Benelux Alliance will occupy for the first year.

The Belt Alliance colonises New Haven, the system that was found three months ago. They plan to try and increase New Haven to the level of a supply point so they can go out exploring.

2502.04

The ECU decides to focus on constructing new fighters. The ECU Fury bomber and the RA Dart interceptor are capable, but the ECU wants a new fighter which can perform both rolls. They also decide to work on mass driver technology for use on vessels against a potentially genocidal enemy.

The LIC colonised Lhoqran-C.

The Berian Federation constructs two prototype K'Hash-Lokr'Is

2502.05

The ECU invests more into weapon technology, aiming to develop two new classes of weaponry--the Fusion Cannon and the Concussion Cannon.

The Berian Federation constructs six K'Hash-Tukr'E light cruisers.

The Elaqrin Free Union declares hostilities on the ECU.

The OFR activates another spliter colony--the Shelqra Confederation. They are noted by the OFR--a race that is no slouch when it comes to fighter usage--as being fighter-heavy. Only eight warships are in service, but they carry 24 heavy assault fighter flights and sixty ultralight bomber flights.

2502.06

The ECU, requiring 40% on each of the micro technologies, rolls a 37, 11, 14 and 13.

The OFR also succeeds in its Early Year Tech Increases, as does the LIC. Unfortunately, for the time being the LIC will not be able to capitalise as the economy is only slowly growing.

The ECU is wondering what to do regarding the EFU. The EFU is quite literally not worth fighting over. The possible political repercussions between them and the OFR and LIC are way too much for the ECU to decide to send in the heavies. But the EFU links to Wolf, and Wolf is not a system that can be threatened...

Thats okay. Been reading yesterday, so no updates. Hells Gate. Tried looking up reviews for it, but the only one I could see is bad--and was posted on two different sites.

Theres the three major interstellar powers--the ECU, OFR and LIC. Then the Berian Federation, nominally an INT-1 but since there have been no successful exploration attempts, the BF is still practically a IND-3 power. Then there are three splinter colonies, but I group them together as a single entry on the turn sheet as they're hardly going to need me generating multiple orders for them. At present, there is the Elaqrin Free Union (one jump from Omazra), the Belt Alliance (with the colonisation of New Haven, now a multi-system splinter colony) and the Shelqra Confederation. However, if the ECU decides that the EFU need to learn a lesson of interstellar politics, it might turn into two splinter colonies. I'd be tempted to do an unusual thing, which would be that if the ECU jumps in, all guns blazing, and destroys the EFU fleet, the EFU would become a part of the OFR. I think that the OFR would get slightly annoyed if the ECU conquers the EFU outright and has another entry point into Omazra, no matter how good their relationship is.

Just designing the OFR and LIC refits. Its a pretty fair assumption to make that the OFR will both refit their vessels and then increase the size of their navy. Except for the Imazlor frigates that form the defence squadrons, only six heavy and six light cruisers form the primary battleline of the Republic.

The LIC are planning to do so as well, but their slower economic growth rate means that there is little chance of them doing anything soon. But when they do, they'll going to be a strong power. I decided to design a variant hull of the Cyrhekhan III as a defensive vessel (or fortress in the Lhoqran nomenclature) and its pretty impressive. If I can refit some of the Cyrhekhan IIIs to the Cyrhekhan II, I can move the Airhekhan Is to the main battlefleet, or even scrap some of them to save on maintenance costs.

As for the ECU, their new designs are fairly interesting. There are five new designs, two of which are superdreadnought hulls. The other three are an enlarged missile cruiser using the base Ganymede and Triton as the hull, a heavy cruiser that uses the base Phobos as a hull, and a true light carrier, the Io, which is even smaller than the Hermes yet carries the same number of fighters. And I want to get the new Spitfire fighter into production. They'll be able to take over the Fury and Dart as the primary fighter of the fleet...

A very interesting campaign history, and definitely filled with an interesting cast of characters! My solo campaigns tend to crash and burn before a large number of alien species and governments are woven into the tapestry.

You sure have had a lot of splinter colony results, too. It is good to see that they haven't severely imbalanced the gameplay results. Sure, they did give the Humans an early shot in the arm economically, but given the fact that there have been a few other powers with the same or greater economic strength, I can't see that it has been a major factor.

I would be interested in seeing your list of Mysterious Encounters. The kinds of ideas you have there sound like they would work great in the second Star Charts book (of course, the first volume needs finished before I get to that...).

Its only a couple of mysterious encounters, mainly centred around a sort of B5 First One-like race that devotes itself to one aspect of the campaign. When I generated the Adjudicators, I said a roll of 1-3 would mean the Adjudicators had determined they were too big a risk and would destroy them. 4 to 7 would have been a 'not ready yet'--kinda like some of the races that ST:TOS discovered. 8-10 resulted in an uplift effort where one of three options were applied: a productivity boost, an increase to the next NPE tech level, or both.

With the races, it tends to help that I always have a general idea of what the race is before I generate them, as I have a race encounter list of 93-94 alien races and six human powers representing various parts of the world.

2502.07

The EFU decides that the ECU is not taking them seriously and declares war. And to be fair, the ECU isn't taking them seriously (I have kept the ECU at a peacetime economy, or else the amount of EP would quickly grow to four figures)

In an amazing and quite frankly unanticipated move, the OFR and LIC both roll 100s and an offer of unification is made and accepted. The two will now be known as the Omazan-Lhoqran Union (OLU) and plans are set in motion to ease the two militaries and exploration corps.

The ECU, meanwhile, constructs one Deimos, one Terra, four Ios and a maintenance group of prototype Spitfires. All pass their rolls, and it is decided to phase in the Spitfire heavy assault fighter in favour of the Fury heavy bomber and the Dart heavy interceptor.

2502.08

The Berian Federation constructs four K'Lash-Tukr'E corvette prototypes, and a maintenance group of the new N'Rashtr'A light fighter. All succeed their prototype rolls, one corvette getting a '1' on its roll, and five fighter flights getting the same result.

The ECU decides to construct five additional Terras and three Mjollnirs, along with eight more Ios. The existing fighter fleet of 96 Furys and 36 Darts are scrapped and 192 Spitfires are constructed.

The ECU plan to operate the Mjollnir, Terra and Io as a heavy squadron, with the Mjollnir providing scout support and a planetary assault weapon in the form of a mass driver. The two Terras will provide the bulk of the offensive firepower, and the four Ios will provide organic fighter support and light ship-board firepower. The three squadrons will be stationed with the main fleet at Wolf, and will perform surgical strikes on opponents as well as stay with the main fleet.

In exploration news, ahead of the fleet refit, the OLU brings back its exploration fleets. It seems that the OFR explorer vessels are preferred, as the Twrhekhan IX and the Khrhekhan II are being scrapped. The Twrhekhan IX also functioned as the assault capability of the LIC fleet, but were deemed too expensive to refit. The Khrhekhan II are excellent in their role as hyperspace probes, but the decision is that they are too fragile and would represent too much of a danger to Omazans if they ran into a hostile power.

The ECU explores the last jump route out of U'Gr'Hiy, and it leads to a new system--a colony world. There is an interesting find of a pirate cache--which nets the ECU 21EP--but of more interest is the number of jump lanes--four more jump lanes have been found.
