The Four Year's War: Prelude

Post by BroAdso »

In the early 23rd Century, the Federation's rapid growth tested its political unity, technological inventiveness, and diplomatic skill. In this adventure, we will be following and taking part in the defense and administration of a crucial section of Federation space, the Arcanis (or Archanis, depending) sector.

This sector - strategically menacing on spacelanes to Earth, Vulcan, and Andoria - became the center of the terrible Four Year's War from approximately 2242 to 2246. We arrive at the start of 2240, before tensions have escalated, to see if we can push back the start date of the war or at least win it more convincingly than the narrow escape Starfleet had historically.

Here is the introduction to the sector, the small fleet Starfleet has allocated to begin full expansion here, and the logistics and resources at our disposal.

First six months played!

Now it's time for your input. Give strategic advice to the Federation, storyline advice to the CM to think of missions and events to insert into things, and more.

These two documents show where things stand as of 06.2240, and the one battle in which we engaged over the first six months.

Admiral Liu, Admiral's Official Report, Stardate 24006.24

It has been a truly eventful six months since my command of the Arcanis sector began. Immediately, we received distress calls from one of the more distant planets in the system, the Soren system. Though the planet was away from our supply lanes, Captain Ulrich of the USS Marduk offered to lead a force to escort the transports, reasoning that his vessels could stand for a long cruise if no Klingon activity had been reported in the system.

Captain Chase reached the Seron system with no trouble, as anticipated, and unloading of emergency supplies was almost complete by the end of 24001. According to his reports, the locals had damage consistent with attack by organized raiders or an invasion force, but insisted it "hadn't been the Klingons," despite their presence less than a month's journey away at low warp.

During that same four month window, our two Asia-class ships and a squadron of Archer patrol scouts began monitoring and studying a possible site for colonization at Sherman's Planet, especially the unusual and high-growth native crops the early settlers had discovered. Not glamorous work, but the discoveries show the planet would make and excellent site for settlement and crop growing.

However, my daily briefings with the science staff were broken when, on the morning of Stardate 24004.14, I was awoken by an emergency transmission from Captain Chase on the Marduk. They had engaged a large Klingon fleet as it entered the system at low warp. The fight was inconclusive, as both sides were determined to minimize damage to the transport groups which accompanied them, but the Valiant was damaged and one Klingon vessel - a D4 type medium cruiser- seemed very heavily damaged by the time both sides broke off.

Captain Chase asked for permission to withdraw rather than fighting on reserve dilithum and deuterium, but also said he suspected the transport groups which accompanied the Klingon fleet were carrying ground troops to attack and occupy Seron. In my calculation, and in Captain Chase's, a second and more prolonged engagement against the Klingons - especially with out fleet on reserve energy - would go poorly and would lose us significant fleet assets without preventing an attack on Seron itself. I ordered the withdrawal, though we evacuated as many Seronnese as we could aboard our transport group.

Construction is proceeding at the Axanar shipyards on two Lancaster type cruisers and a Lincoln class escort to bolster our fleet, and I have ploughed most of our engineering effort into improving the infrastructure on P'Jem and the new colony on Sherman's World.

With six months left in 2240 and Klingon activity on the rise - especially after our first hostile contact in Seron - I am left in grave doubt that the sector can avoid outright war.

Admiral Liu, out.

Liked the graphical design of Seron battle.
Feels like the Klingons are getting the upper hand after the Seron battle. Maybe the Feds needs to have eyes in the Archanis system.

Oh yeah, that battle screen is very cool. Though probably more work than I'm willing to put into mine. Haha

As much as the Federation fleet might want to remain at Marduk, it doesn't seem to be in the cards with the fleet that they have there. They were lucky this time, but they need a few more ships (or another small cruiser/destroyer squadron) to reinforce their position.

Best to abandon Seron and think about building up a larger presence at Indira or Archanis to then push forward from there. If you made a strong push to secure Archanis, you could then place a Supply Depot there that would give you a good coverage into the potential war zone.
