Re: Lost in a Sea of Stars II - 2E Development Update

Have you considered linking food production to tech? Rther than adjusting the cost, you could have people tech up to increase production. Linking food production to tech would get pretty nasty, as you would then have to apply the modifier to every single colony instead of keeping it simple to Utili...

Re: Curious about the business tactic used here...

Another way to handle loyalty would be to roll once per turn per Sector. The number of systems in the sector, or number of jumps from sector capital to outlying system could be a penalties to encourage division of the empire into smaller administrative groups. Depending on how badly the roll fails, ...

Re: A Scenario and a Setting

Players could collaborate on larger projects on the home world until they get an offworld industrial base set up. I also think it might work well with three players. Each player gets their own private jump, and two jumps they share with others. You could also start it after the initial development p...

Re: VBAM2E Colonies

I wouldn't mind if colonies started with Tech Level of Sector Capital-1, frankly. New colonies might have better tech than old colonies, but they probably aren't going to be cutting edge. Possibly allow for that tech level to be bought up at colonization? There is a good point that can be argued he...

A Scenario and a Setting

Have you considered investigating the 2300AD setting? It meshes quite nicely with VBAM in a lot of ways. And, relating to that, and the recent Colony draft document, I have a scenario suggestion. No Peace Beyond The Core. All the players represent different nations from the same homeworld. The homew...

Re: Home Stretch - Scenarios

Have you considered posting scenarios online for free as bonus content to keep the price of the print version down? They could be bundled with the PDF. I don't imagine scenarios take as much time to develop, and you could solicit scenario designs from the community. Put in a single scenario in the b...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)

One of the great problems with Stealth is that it is a flat 2 MU per point of Stealth, so that ships can be more stealthy than others and it can scale against an opponent's Scout value that also improves at the same rate. The more I look at things the more I'm thinking that it might be easier for e...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)

I suppose you could get around the stealth problem by increasing both the cost and the effectiveness of Stealth, and treat it more like defensive EW. If it takes up enough room, it can only be mounted in larger ships, which take up more shipyard capacity and can't be built or prototyped as quickly o...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)

Re Stealth and Detection Breakpoints for the size of both sides are reasonable. For the detection roll itself, you could either switch to 3D6, giving a larger range of results with a tighter cluster in the middle. No Detection could be changed to No Contact - you know an enemy fleet is in-system, bu...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)

Are we reading Stealth as EW capabilities that can cover an entire force, or is it a more local effect that protects individual ships? A fleet of cloaked assault transports shouldn't make their unsteadily cruiser escorts harder to find, but if they can extend their cloak like an umbrella (which is k...

Re: VBAM 2E Playtest Files (Was: Any Updates?)

I think the Strategic Resources are fine. You could argue that it should be possible to transport them from one place to another... but I think the effects will disseminate out for most of them. It's not like space travel is trivial. It takes months! And it's hard to transport a beautifully calming ...

Re: Scifi space battle novels whats your favorites?

Excession by Ian Banks has wicked strange space battles. Singularity Sky and Iron Sunrise by Charlie Stross have interesting takes on what space combat might become, and how militaries might need to adapt. Bujold is amazing, but her Vorkosigan books aren't about the tactics or tech, really, they're ...
