Well, if you want realism then I'd suggest something like the Attack Vector/Ten Worlds solution of no fighters at all ;)

I think we're fairly rapidly approaching the school of thought that there are two main sci-fi fighter "clichés", There's backgrounds like Honor Harrington, Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc where bigger is almost always better (admittedly this is probably the more "realistic" option), an...

Obviously different backgrounds will have slightly different takes on this sort of thing, YMMV, I should probably add some examples to this end of the argument, In Star Trek and Honor Harrington bigger is usually better (because their weapons tend to always hit unless the target throws their aim ou...

That's a good point - and would reinforce the need for escorts and turret-suppression units,

I like it,

Will that not create a situation where bigger is almost always better (in all situations unless background materiel strongly emphasizes the lighter craft)? Using your baseline state I could field one heavy fighter for every two light fighters, and while dedicated missions balances things somewhat, w...

Gareth, your carrier recommendation there just helped me through a quandary I have had for about six months :) Cool - glad to hear it, Thinking further, this sort of mechanic will reinforce my earlier comments about light/heavy fighters - because your CAP is of limited numbers you will want to maxi...

In addition to a potential influence above, I also have a rules change cribbed in so that each point of Carrier rating allows you to provide one flight with a +1 DV, AS or AF bonus (not all three, just one) that is applied during the Assignments Phase. That's a neat idea that plays to the fact that...

A hard limit only benefits heavy fighters and bombers and they already are very powerful. Currently there are too few incentives to use light units. Maybe making the lighter units better at screening might help? Perhaps the light units can grant a formation bonus to the larger units, Or just absorb...

Our merc units (MASs) should have good ground crews to keep these new and old birds flying Why? These things are expensive (especially for a 'cash-strapped merc outfit'). Employing highly trained technical staff is expensive (especially in a war-zone), Plus of course a 'cash-strapped merc outfit' i...

This also means that flotilla size would downgrade when DV is halved. I wonder if that's too drastic a change to be realistic. Would a flotilla operate at 100% until it was reduced to half size, then suddenly operate half as effectively? No, the change would be more gradual. That's the issue I'm wr...

Having not yet played, I face the problem of determining stats and costs for each given fleet or group or whatever. I guess I can rummage through the sample source material at the back of the campaign guide, pick roughly what ships would go into a given fleet, and total their basic stats into one u...

To some extent you're just replacing the word "ship" with the word "fleet" (or battlegroup), (albeit you're making the "ships" larger and more expensive) So I don't see why VBAM couldn't work with it, It depends upon your background - I tend to prefer economy-strapped b...

Yeah, why not! It would be rather irritating to have the "new" Fulcrums constantly down for maintenance. Heh, Current story aside I got the impression that a lot of third world countries and mercenaries used Soviet gear because it was more reliable than Western equivalent, not less, (Give...

I do like the idea of science station generating more research on frontier worlds. What if it was a +x% modifier to the number of EP spent or something? Yeah - I think this is almost necesary otherwise an Empire will just build all of its facilities on its homeworld... So a science station in a sys...

Sure, but if you are limited on your per-month expenditure on R&D by the number of facilities you own then it becomes less economical to do that without having to be too constraining and making R&D facilities too expensive to have sitting around "idling", By way of example: If I wa...
