Re: Comments on latest playtest

I think it was A Sky Full of Ships that did the fighters-as-a-weapon rather explicitly, but it's been awhile. I prefer for fighters to be more discrete, though, so that they can be built and take damage separately. It does complicate matters when it comes to damage assignment, of course. In some way...

Re: Commodore level system Gen and With A Purpose

The Commodore or Admiral level system generation works well for players that want a smaller map but still have more real estate to fight over. At that point strategic maneuver is less important, of course, and you might consider taking a page from Stars Divided and have ships require multiple turns ...

Re: Comments on latest playtest

As an update, I did add a small commentary on fighters in VBAM and a poll for preference on attack factors over at the patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/tyrellohr Tonight after work I am going to continue working on the combat rule updates and then roll over to some other rules tweaks. But still...

Re: Comments on latest playtest

As an update, I have been working some more on the space combat side of things and am integrating notes from my playtesting (as well as your feedback!) and will work on that some more after work tonight. I think I'm happy enough with the flow of combat now to begin rolling those notes into actual ru...

Re: Comments on latest playtest

VBAM 1E had the fighter replenishment rule like that where you could move fighters to a carrier as long as they were in supply. I am thinking about implementing a revised version of that rule that active fighters in a supply source system can be redeployed automatically, but those in other non-suppl...

Re: Any life in the old girl?

Given my current rate of completion, I think the core rules (sans diplomacy) should be done by Memorial Day weekend. I am going over my revisions from the last few playtest versions to see what worked, what didn't, and what could be improved. Expect the next dev diary to probably discuss constructio...

Re: Comments on latest playtest

Thanks for the clarification, Aelius! The way I was reading things made it sound like the fighters magically replenished aboard the carrier after each battle but I didn't see the upfront cost for them. As you say, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the factory lines to disappear when the carrier blo...

Re: Comments on latest playtest

Another quick note on the combat: this draft was made intentionally more basic to allow us to play with a simplified version of the combat rules in order to make sure that the basic flow and results of the combat are what we want them to be. If our ship designs are like those in Stars Divided, then ...

Conversation here is fine -- I'm doing the Patreon thing more for my own benefit to make it easier to aggregate and deliver updates and get better analytics on posts. Which is why the core game/playtest stuff will be free content over there. Critical Hits: I agree that free directed damage against a...

Re: Any life in the old girl?

Paul, you know the name of one of the White Whales I've been hunting for the last few years :) Yes, Empire of the Sun 's combat has some similarities to VBAM's, and I've been trying to incorporate elements of it into our test versions. Specifically, being able to look at your total attack factor and...

Re: Inter-planetary/small interstellar campaign setting concepts

One interesting approach that I saw in SpaceCorp is to have each movement into an outer zone cost a progressively higher amount to move into. For example it might take 1 Move to travel between areas in the inner system, but it could cost 2 Move to move out towards Mars, or 6 Move to get between area...

Re: Any life in the old girl?

At this point the plan is to complete all of the core books for what the Galaxies/Rebirth project has become before we commercially release anything else. These new books will ultimately replace 2E, and I want to make sure that those that bought 2E are taken care of to upgrade them at little or no c...

Re: War For The Outer Rim

As the game ends Year 2.6, everyone's rate of expansion has slowed, and there's still no first contact between the two forces. A series of unlucky exploration rolls - and caution from both forces lest they explore too fast and lose precious ships - means there's been little movement. The high cost ...

Re: Any life in the old girl?

It's a victim of no one having time to work on things, and what time we have being spent rearranging the old deck chairs more than anything else. There is still a spark of life going on in the background, but the focus has been on improving combat first and foremost. What has been happening on my en...

Re: New member with a few questions

Much delayed response as seems to be the norm anymore, but I think most of the VBAM 1E custom empire rules from the Menagerie should port over to 2E without much hassle. 2E was mainly an attempt to clean up some of the more wayward elements of the rules. Starmada Edition should still be fairly appli...
