Re: Ground Units

The Federation has dispatched a trio of Chandley assault cruisers to drop marines on the Republic world of Ryloth. The three Federation CA have a total of 12 Assault and are carrying 2 x Marines (ATR 4, INF 3, ARM 2, AIR 1, CR 2, Marines) and 1 x Light Dropship (ATR 2, INF 2, ARM 0, AIR 2, CR 2). Th...

Re: Ground Units

It seems that the continual problem that we have with balancing ground combat is that having Defense be an ablative defense against Attrition damage is probably our #1 problem. It's just too hard to balance that effectively given the shallow stats that we have now. If we had just Attrition, it would...

Re: Ground Units

In experimenting with different solutions, I like to take a look at what settings would make good use of the systems and how I could replicate them. For VBAM, I use Star Wars as a common touchstone if only because that setting has an increased emphasis on ground warfare. You get a pretty wide select...

Re: System Anomalies

If we switch to having a separate roll for anomalies, here is an example of what that table could look like: Stellar Anomalies Table (2d6) Roll Stellar Anomaly 2 Splinter Colony 3 Abandoned Colony 4 Strategic Resource 5 Dense Asteroids 6-8 No Effect 9 Nebula 10 Ruins 11 Derelict 12 Mysterious Encoun...

Bases & Defenses

Bases are kind of our last remaining major question mark in Galaxies. I've been consciously avoiding them until we have ship combat sorted out, but I think now is a good time to start hashing out the final details of how bases should be presented in the rules. I think a good starting point is to ask...

Re: Space Combat - The Elephant in the Room

Okay, then it sounds like my jitters are unfounded and that we can find workarounds to any problems that might come up otherwise. Then I'll proceed with those edits and try to get some more rules roughed out and content moved around/filled in. :D

Re: Space Combat - The Elephant in the Room

From a game play perspective, I would prefer for players to be forced to rely on Tenders for a corvette swarm strategy, as that is at least interesting to see play out on the table. Then you end up with command tenders that come in with high DV, CR, and Tender value, and allow more of the little shi...

Re: Ground Units

This does highlight one of my worries when it comes to high DEF ratings and damage assignment. It looks like after the first turn, the Orks were unable to score any damage because it was always being applied by the defender to the unit with the highest DEF, completing negating their attack. This can...

Re: System Anomalies

As a follow up on system anomalies, would it make more sense for us to have a separate System Anomalies table that you roll on that has about a 50% chance of "no anomaly" and the rest of the anomalies filled in versus the current setup of anomalies occurring as a result of a roll on the Sp...

Re: Scripts and Computer Play Aids?

It's good to see you back! I know what you mean about real life and the day job putting you in a mindset where you just get burnt out on something and need to take time off to recharge. I think Jay and Garland were working on something in Unity at one point, but I wasn't in the loop on that project....

Re: Institutes and XP

I wonder if it's better to let officers gain abilities only once per year, too? Or should they be able to use XP as they gain it during the year? I've been playing it that the XP has to be spent when earned if possible, but I'm still not sure if players should be compelled to use extra XP out of th...

Space Combat - The Elephant in the Room

After talking with Jay about his FT playtest campaign and watching some of the discussions that have come up, I want to get a sense for how players feel that space combat should be approached in VBAM? We all know how the system has handled it up to this point, but I still get an overriding sense tha...

Re: VBAM Galaxies

Any pieces of the rewritten rules since late October you particularly want to see getting a workout? I am really impressed with the amount of progress that's been made! At this point I think a general playtest that just throws everything we've got against the proverbial wall to see what sticks shou...

Re: VBAM Galaxies

I've been mulling over the movement rate change myself, and while it works better on larger game maps I think it actually diminishes the importance of major lanes and makes it too easy to pivot and redeploy your fleet across the galaxy. But swapping back to 1 jump per turn (2 if one is a major lane)...

Re: System Setup Variation

Let me know how that works out! I think the Civilian Base concept (Starports, Trading Posts, what have you) is going to be the best way to directly modify the trade value of a system in a way that seems natural, and also helps to represent that there is some sort of civilian infrastructure presence ...
