Re: Steel Castles sourcebook in the yards!

I'm really glad to see that work on Steel Castles is moving on forward! It's a neat and creative application of the ideas of the system, and it's sent me down many a wikipedia hole looking at all the neat ships you're using as source material.

Re: How are things going on Galaxies/Rebirth?

Finally, election season and its aftermath is OVER here and I got some time to play out a couple of battles in the new Galaxies: Rebirth rules! Here it is, if anyone's still out there. This reaffirmed that I really like the Galaxies Rebirth combat rules with Fire Effectiveness, one-round consolidati...

Re: Using VBAM for an Honorverse-type Setting

Either 2E or Galaxies might help with an Honorverse setting, since the economic system is much 'smoother' in both. I found it much less hassle to track income vs maintenance, for example. As far as an Honorverse setting, 2E, with its focus on combat by squadrons and flagships, might suit the Honorve...

How are things going on Galaxies/Rebirth?

I was a huge fan of some of the good ideas brought forward for Galaxies, and then some of the combat ideas for Rebirth. They've gotten scattered around a lot of different threads, but I'd love a way to see a general update on those things. Some of them, taken together, were pretty fun and revolution...

Re: Tech, Special Abilities, and Unit Design

I'm enjoying thinking about the options presented by the new, more organized Galaxies system. Here's what the Federation might look like in this system, where each player has six tech levels, and each tech level has one slot each for Escort (CT/DD), Cruiser (CL/CA), Capital (BC/BB), Superheavy (DN/S...

Re: Tackling the 4X Experience

Whew! Finished up the new exploration rules for a full year. http://i.imgur.com/Z0VaBSx.jpg TestExplorationGalaxiesJune.pdf The new economy moves things along at a nice clip. It's very easy to get a couple initial colonies up and running in the first few days, and setting the number of ships + fligh...

Re: Tackling the 4X Experience

Here's the set of tables I'll be using to generate systems in my shot at testing out the same "year 1-2" model of exploration and economics! Should post the results this evening, long boring day stuck in front of computer today.

Re: Tackling the 4X Experience

I'm really liking the new flow, and looking at how well tech advancements integrate into the new economic system reduces my worry about not letting players invest directly. They can do so by choosing to ramp up investment in PROD, or by choosing low-EP potential planets to settle, which will return ...

Re: Rebirth: Combat Demo

Finished up a much larger playtest with big fleets, a two-part space battle, and a ground battle. Quick summation: The Dominion has warped a large invasion fleet into the Bajor sector. It consists of a single Superdreadnaught, substantial number of capital ships, a few Scout Destroyers, and most imp...

Re: Rebirth: Combat Demo

the biggest outlier I found is that you were giving a bonus for each Scout in a fleet rather than just a flat bonus for having a Scout at all. I was going that route to maintain some degree of balance, as open ended modifiers can really break the rules. I based it on the Commitment Cost (CC) of the...

Re: Rebirth: Combat Demo

Busy week, but I've been finding some time to playtest. I'll put them in PDF and JPEG format this evening or tomorrow, but for now here's a here's a gdocs link with comments enabled to my slightly more systematized version of the new Rebirth combat system. I've probably misinterpreted some of what y...

Re: Rebirth: Combat Demo

Flights can be used to provide tactical support (AS bonus) to friendly ground units. Troops with AF are then used to shoot back at these flights. Good! I do like this model. It removes a lot of difficulty in transitioning between space and ground battle, and makes fighters "special" and w...

Re: Rebirth: Combat Demo

Wow! A lot to think about here. Positives: 1) Consolidating the ground and fleet combat models. Yes! Makes a lot of sense. I would really like to see this. However, if you are going to do so, there needs to be a Ground equivalent of fighters, to that AF is a stat you'd "want" to give a gro...

Re: Tackling the 4X Experience

For that reason, I started assuming that most VBAM campaigns are going to last about 120 turns. This is an important measuring stick, as it gives us an idea for how the game should be balanced to go from a single system on Turn 1 to reaching a conclusion by around Turn 120. In my experience, most 4...

Re: Galaxies: The Final Frontier

Really great campaign reports, BroAdso! I've been stuck in the dilithium mines in Coridan the last few months, but it's always great to see that the Federation is keeping up the fight in the Bajor sector! :D Hopefully neither the Romulans nor the Klingons decide to take advantage of this situation,...
